History and Science: The Archgymnasium (Archiginnasio) is a historic building of the oldest university in the Western world (the University of Bologna was founded in 1088). Religious sites: The Basilica of Santo Stefano (“Seven Churches”) is a mysterious and atmospheric medieval complex consisting of several interconnected temples, courtyards and cloisters. The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca is a temple located on a hill outside the city. The longest portico in the world (almost 3.8 km), consisting of 666 arches, leads to it. Gastronomy (“Bologna Fat”): Bologna bears the proud nickname La Grassa (“Fat”) and is considered the gastronomic capital of Italy. It was here that Tortellini (small dumplings filled with meat or cheese) was invented. Bolognese sauce (a traditional meat stew served exclusively with tagliatelle pasta). Mortadella (famous Italian boiled sausage). The city is also famous for its cheeses (Parmigiano-Reggiano) and wines (Lambrusco, Malvasia).
