Old Rimini (Centro Storico) is not only beaches and sea, but also a real open-air museum. Here, ancient Roman history intertwines with the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. To avoid getting lost and see the most important thing, just follow this route: 🏛 1. Arch of Augusto (Arco di Augusto) This is the “gate” to the old city. The oldest Roman arch in northern Italy, built in 27 BC. in honor of Emperor Augustus. The main pedestrian street Corso d'Augusto begins from here. 🌉 2. Tiberius Bridge (Ponte di Tiberio) The symbol of the city and the main hashtag for photos. This bridge is over 2000 years old, it has survived barbarians and wars, and cars and people still walk across it! From here you have gorgeous views of the sea and the old city, especially at sunset. 🗣 3. Square of the Three Martyrs (Piazza Tre Martiri) A lively square where the heart of the city beats. According to legend, it was here in 49 BC. Julius Caesar gave his famous speech to his legionnaires after crossing the Rubicon. In the center of the square stands a statue of Caesar. ⛪ 4. Temple Malatesta (Tempio Malatestiano) Cathedral and a true masterpiece of the Renaissance. From the outside it looks a little rough and unfinished, but be sure to take a look inside! Excellent frescoes, precious marble reliefs and the famous crucifix by the great Giotto have been preserved there. 🏰 5. Sismondo Fortress (Castel Sismondo) A gloomy and majestic fortress built by the famous (and very bloodthirsty) ruler of Rimini Sigismondo Malatesta. Advice: it is currently undergoing long-term reconstruction, so you can’t get inside, but from the outside it looks very powerful and perfectly conveys the spirit of the Middle Ages. ⛲ 6. Piazza Cavour The main medieval square. The fate of the city was decided here for centuries. Pay attention to the Podesta Palace (Palazzo del Arengo) with beautiful arches and an elegant fountain with a pine cone (Fontana della Pigna) in the center. 💎 Hidden Gem: House of the Surgeon (Domus del Chirurgo) Right in Piazza Ferrari (not far from the Tiberius Bridge), under a glass dome you can see the ruins of an ancient Roman house doctor of the 3rd century AD with incredibly preserved mosaics.
