Novoafonsky waterfall

📍 Abkhazia | 🗓 Excursion Season | 📅 30.11.-0001 — 03.09.1926
The waterfall in New Athos is man-made - it is a "side effect" of the construction of an arch dam on the Psirtsha River by monks in 1882. The monks of the New Athos Monastery were very practical, that is why they actively used the waterfall for economic needs: they built refrigerator chambers behind the wall of water, with the help of special channels they organized a system of watering the gardens, and on the dam itself they built a mill, the blades of which turned the water. During Soviet times, the place gradually fell into disrepair, but my paternal grandfather and grandmother still managed to see the waterfall as part of an excursion in 1939.
